Does the bagged carrot, or the un-bagged carrot go off sooner?
In some cases, the packaging is for convenience.
In some cases, the packaging is for convenience. It’s a lot easier for you to pick up a bag of carrots than to pick up 20 individual carrots and then try to get them home. But in other cases, the packaging actually does extend shelf-life. A lot of people say they want to move away from plastic packaging, and what people have to understand is that if we don’t use the packaging that’s available right now, we actually create more food waste. Packaged produce also helps us to stack things into trucks. You can’t exactly have loose berries jammed into the back of a semi-trailer, so sometimes the plastics unfortunately are doing good things for the environment and what we’re working on is making sure that we’ve got biodegradable packaging and that it’s more sustainable all the time. It’s not as simple as just getting rid of all packaging, because that’s the most sustainable way to do it.
