Question

Are there any significant welfare concerns around the use C02 to stun commercial pigs or plans to phase out this form of stunning?

Answer

Some of the positives of using C02 over other methods of stunning include being able to process pigs in groups rather than forcing them to walk in single file, which mirrors more closely the natural behaviour of pigs.

Some of the positives of using C02 over other methods of stunning include being able to process pigs in groups rather than forcing them to walk in single file, which mirrors more closely the natural behaviour of pigs. This reduces the overall level of stress on the animal, minimises the risk for human error in handling and improves the overall quality of the meat. Victorian farmers are always working alongside the government to ensure best practise is abided by and continually improved upon. The development of Australian Animal Welfare Standards and Guidelines for Livestock at Processing Establishments has commenced which will, when completed, provide a template for national welfare standards for abattoirs.
